International Amnesty (AI) echoed the scandal over the leak of chats between the former president of the National Party, Pablo Iturralde, and the senator Gustavo Penadés, by expressing his “concern about the weakening of the system of guarantees of the “Uruguayan State.”
The organization spoke of “alleged pressure from the political system to “Attorney General of the Nation” and urged that judicial investigations “be carried out in depth and independently,” amid questions from the president Luis Lacalle Pou and other members of the PN.
From AI they considered that there are “various signs that show a weakening that comprehensively impacts the exercise of civil and political rights, as well as the economic, social, cultural and environmental rights of the country’s population, affecting the Rule of law and its institutions.
The NGO recalled that in its annual reports it had expressed its “concern” at what it considered “signs of weakening of the system of guarantees of rights, directly affecting the institutionality from the country”.
“This fact only deepens this concern and urges us to remain alert to possible violations of human rights”, They concluded with a statement.

How will Justice act in the face of the possible impact of Iturralde?
After the scandal broke out due to the leak of the conversations between Iturralde and Penadés, the surrogate court prosecutor Monica Ferrero decided to begin an “urgent” investigation into the possible impact of the political system on the Justice.
The spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office, Javier Benech, He stated that Ferrero’s decision is due to the request of Iturralde himself, who sent him a “note” to investigate the leak, considering that any possible pressure “is Absolutely false.”
It is worth remembering that the chats date back to the end of March 2023, when Iturralde referred to the first appointed prosecutor, Mariana Alfaro. “This is a great HDP. She was the one who requested the raid on Azul on the subject of rape and it is on the subject of Ocean. I shot him to death today and he shit. “He understood the msg (sic),” she wrote to Penadés.
Along these lines, he continued: “The next one is Ghione. If there is a logic, they should give it to her. Ghione is my friend.” Next, the now-detained former senator responded: “Hopefully.” The next day, the former president of the PN added: “They gave it to Alicia Ghione. Just called me. She asked me for your number. It is completely trustworthy. “Great guy.”
On the other hand, he referred to the attorney general Juan Gomez: “He’s a big shit and he knows very well that Alicia is ours because I talked to him a thousand times. Jorge Diaz, that had her submerged. You have to pressure it. You have to push him or he will shit and leave.”
