There is currently no treatment available that could combat this complication in the long term. In a clinical study led by Georg Böhmig and Katharina Mayer from MedUni Vienna/AKH Vienna, a new therapy principle has proven to be safe and effective. The results were recently published in the highly respected “New England Journal of Medicine”.
Hope for heart and lungs
In the study, patients were given either the antibody felzartamab or a drug with no pharmacological effect (placebo). The result: Felzartamab has been shown to have the potential to effectively and safely combat AMR after kidney transplants. “The results of our study could represent a breakthrough,” says Mayer. There is also hope that the drug could counteract the rejection of other donor organs such as the heart or lungs.
