It was only four days ago that the OÖN reported on a “mourning event for wheat beer fans” in the Innviertel: In a roundabout near Geinberg (district of Ried im Innkreis), a truck had lost around 10,000 bottles of wheat beer, and the fire brigade was on duty for hours.

Now a similar incident occurred in Styria, not far from the border with Upper Austria: On Tuesday morning, hundreds of Gösser crates fell onto the road in the municipality of Liezen. A beer transporter had lost most of its cargo in the roundabout at the intersection of the B320 with the A9 slip road and the B146 and the Werkstrasse.

Hours of use

20 emergency personnel from two fire departments were busy for several hours recovering the bottles and crates and removing the broken bottles from the road. With the help of the Liezen road maintenance department, a wheel loader and a dump truck as well as a forklift from a nearby industrial plant, the broken beer bottles were loaded and disposed of. The rest of the load had to be secured, after which the damaged articulated truck was able to leave the scene of the accident accompanied by the police.

A road sweeper was used to clear the remaining broken glass from the road so that the affected junction could be fully reopened to traffic at around 10 a.m. Due to the restricted traffic flow in the area of operation, there were significant disruptions and traffic jams in the morning traffic, the Liezen fire department reported on its website.

In general, May does not seem to be a good month for breweries that want to transport their hoppy product from A to B: Twice within a few days, a large quantity of beer from the Salzburg brewery “Stiegl” went missing from a truck.
