When the fire department arrived, the deceased person was lying on the sidewalk, a second person was standing at the window of the burning apartment, where flames were already blazing out – she was rescued by the fire department with a turntable ladder, says Martin Wakolbinger, fire chief of the FF Rohrbach im Mühlkreis.
The fire broke out in a bar on the town square in Rohrbach, above which there are apartments and a guest house. 14 people had to be evacuated, says the head of operations. “They were cared for by the Red Cross and are currently being accommodated in the town council.” He is currently not aware of any injuries.
250 firefighters in action
At the height of the fire, 13 fire departments and 250 emergency personnel were deployed at Rohrbach’s town square. The Red Cross, the police and the district administration were also on standby. Three aerial rescue devices were on site – two turntable ladders, one of which was from a fire department in Germany that was on duty, and a telescopic mast platform from the Walding fire department.
The flames were prevented from spreading to the neighboring businesses, a glassworks and a bakery, says the commander. On Wednesday morning, some of the metal roofs of the neighboring houses had to be opened to ensure that the fire did not spread slowly. The cause of the fire was still pending. “The operation will certainly last until midday, possibly the whole day,” said Wakolbinger.
