The children were playing in the sand near the Parador del Mar Hau when the incident occurred, as detailed in Primera Hora. Carlos Cruz, interim director of the Isabela Municipal Emergency Management Agency, reported that One of the parents had gotten out of the water to look for something in a portable refrigerator when he heard the sound of lightning and the screams of one of the little ones.

Mishka Garciaa witness to the event, told El Nuevo Día that he was in a nearby restaurant when He saw black clouds and witnessed several lightning strikes, forcing people to get out of the water. Shortly after, tragedy occurred. Garcia heard a loud explosion and watched as people came to the children’s aid, carrying them to safety as thunder continued to fall.
The three children, ages 7, 10 and 12, were taken to hospital, where the oldest of them is in intensive care due to problems with his limbs and cannot yet walk. Local police, under the supervision of Sgt. Jose Ruiz Ruizis investigating the incident.
He Mayor of Isabela, Miguel “Ricky” Méndez, confirmed that the children belong to a Puerto Rican family originally from Toa Baja who lives in the United States and was on vacation at Montones beach.
