It is the project north of Kepler University in Linz’s Auhof that is causing a stir. Up to 100,000 square meters of green space are to be converted into building land to make room for the new digital university. This is completely excessive, says Alexander Jäger, spokesman for the recently founded citizens’ initiative “Let’s save the green belt.”

“We are loud because you are stealing our green space,” chanted opponents of the plans in front of the Old Town Hall last Thursday before the municipal council meeting. Inside, Linz+’s proposal to initiate a referendum on the green belt in Auhof was later rejected by a majority in a secret vote.

But the citizens’ initiative does not want to let this slow them down. More than 5,000 signatures have already been collected to preserve the green belt and to find a new location for the digital university. “We are very proud of this and we are continuing to collect signatures,” says Jäger.

After the first human chain around the Old Town Hall last week, further actions are planned over the summer.
