Still waiting for verdict in Trump trial

Donald Trump spoke to the media after the day of the trial.

The twelve jurors adjourned until Thursday at 9:30 a.m. (local time, 3:30 p.m. CEST). The verdict must be unanimous, so the decision could take some time. Trump is accused in the case of falsifying business documents in connection with hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

His personal lawyer Michael Cohen had given Daniels the money to prevent a revelation about an alleged sexual affair in 2006. Trump has admitted to having paid Cohen back the money. However, the presidential candidate has rejected the allegations in the trial – 34 individual charges – and said the proceedings were politically motivated. He denies having an affair with Daniels.

On the first day of their deliberations, the jury received transcripts of the testimony of Cohen and former publisher of the tabloid newspaper “National Enquirer”, David Pecker, who testified about his efforts to avoid reporting stories that could damage Trump’s candidacy.

How things could continue

The jury’s deliberations can end in three ways: with an acquittal, a guilty verdict or a “hung jury” if unanimity cannot be reached. In the latter case, the proceedings would be considered a “mistrial” – a mistrial – and would have to start over, including a new jury. The judge will decide on any sentence at a later date. The 77-year-old Trump theoretically faces up to four years in prison. However, that would be unusual. It is unclear whether a conviction could harm him in his efforts to be re-elected as US President in November.
