Long-lasting basement fire in apartment building in Perg Image: ww.fotokerschi.at | Brandstätter
Three fire departments from the Perg area were called out on Friday evening for a complex operation: A fire broke out in the basement of an apartment building on Naarner Strasse at around 6 p.m. When the emergency services arrived in the city center, thick, black smoke was already pouring out of the stairwell. Breathing apparatus teams made their way to the source of the fire, but could only see a few centimeters ahead due to the extreme smoke development.

It took some time before the fire was brought under control. The fire was declared out at around 7:15 p.m., but it took several hours to make the cellar smoke-free again. A large contingent of firefighters from Perg, Pergkirchen and Naarn, as well as the Red Cross and the police, were on duty until late into the night. No one was injured, the police announced on Saturday evening, but the material damage is likely to be considerable.

Investigations ongoing
The investigation into the cause of the fire is in full swing. An expert from the Upper Austria Fire Prevention Office and a police fire investigator got an overview of the situation on Saturday. The result: a technical defect is unlikely to be the cause of the fire. “Arson cannot be ruled out under any circumstances,” the police said on Saturday. Further investigations will follow.
