The Wels-Herz-Jesu parish in the Neustadt is celebrating its 100th birthday. The church with its two 73.5-meter-high church towers in the vicinity of the hospital is the largest church in Wels and an anchor for 5,600 Catholics in the Wels Neustadt, but also for many hospital patients and their relatives.
The anniversary will be celebrated appropriately on the weekend of June 7th to 9th. The celebrations will kick off on Friday with the “Long Night of the Church”, which begins at 6 p.m. The Bach Choir will perform works by Anton Bruckner, and the exhibition “100 Years of the Sacred Heart” will be opened, where visitors will learn exciting facts about the history of the Wels Neustadt and the parish. The initiator of the church building was the town pastor Josef Flotzinger. The foundation stone was laid in 1905 with Archduchess Marie Valerie – the foundation stone comes from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem – and the church was consecrated on June 25th, 1911. On New Year’s Eve 1924, the then bishop signed the founding decree of the Sacred Heart parish.
On Saturday, church tours can be attended at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the program for young people starts at 5 p.m. with an “escape room” in the church, followed by camping and a campfire on the sports field.
On Sunday, the festival mass will take place at 9.30 a.m., followed by a parish festival with a children’s program, tombola and the Krenglbach brass band.
