In the district capital of Vöcklabruck, one tonne of waste is disposed of from the public garbage cans every week. Largely unnoticed by the population, the employees of the building yard regularly prevent the 300 or so rubbish bins from being overfilled.
An analysis of the disposed materials came to a surprising result: “More than half are bottles and cans that we have to dispose of as residual waste and thus destroy valuable materials,” says Mayor Peter Schobesberger (SPÖ). “This is not just an environmental disaster, it also costs the city’s citizens thousands of euros in disposal fees.”
But even with the regular hall cleaning campaigns, cans and bottles that are thrown away make up a large proportion of the garbage collected. “A proper deposit system is the order of the day. The status quo is Stone Age, ”emphasizes Vöcklabruck’s Mayor Peter Schobesberger.
