“As in recent months, unemployment at the end of May rose by over a fifth compared to the previous year, to be precise by 23.5 percent. Unfortunately, this is again somewhat higher than the national average of 20.8 percent,” says Othmar Kraml, head of the AMS Wels. The increases are particularly striking in the metal, electrical and unskilled trades. 3,913 people are registered as unemployed in Wels and Wels-Land, 744 more than in the previous year. 1,092 are attending training and further education courses, an increase of 153. The number of new jobs was significantly lower, with 863 job offers.
Lack of economic growth
According to Kraml, companies’ pessimistic assessment is becoming more entrenched due to the lack of economic growth, the economic weakness and the decline in orders.
With an unemployment rate of 2.7 percent (+0.6 percent), Grieskirchen has the fourth lowest unemployment rate in Upper Austria. 837 people are registered with the AMS, 355 are taking part in training courses.
In the Eferding district, 405 people are registered as unemployed with the AMS, 180 are improving their chances on the job market through training.
