The thyroid is a small but effective organ that keeps us busy hormonally throughout our lives and on whose hormone production we depend. If this small organ becomes unbalanced, the effects on the body can be massive.

One in five women over 50 has a nodule in their thyroid, and the probability increases to 50 percent with age. “The majority of these nodules are benign, and very few are thyroid carcinomas,” says Silke Haim, a nuclear medicine specialist at the Barmherzige Schwestern Hospital in Linz and head of the department for medical works councils in the Medical Association of Upper Austria.
