Three other suspects, aged between 22 and 45, were tracked down and arrested. All of them are Romanian citizens. Two of the men may also have been involved in a raid on a food market in Vienna, it was said at a press conference on Thursday.
The incident in Würnitz took place on the night of February 7th and caused a media stir. Four masked men broke into the home of a married couple. The perpetrators were armed with a carpenter’s hammer, metal bar and screwdriver, said State Police Director Franz Popp on Thursday in St. Pölten.

The 50-year-old resident noticed the intruders, so the woman went from the bedroom on the first floor to the ground floor. While still in the stairwell, the criminals attacked her and wrestled her to the ground, said Stefan Pfandler, the head of the Lower Austria State Criminal Police Office. Her husband came to her aid, and the 71-year-old fired three shots from a handgun registered to him and legally owned. A projectile hit one of the burglars. The 46-year-old Romanian was left lying in the garden, seriously wounded, and later received intensive care at the Mistelbach State Hospital. He was also arrested.
