In many places, it is already extremely jolting when you drive along Braunau’s streets by car or bicycle. While many streets have already been repaired, the damage to the road surface on some others is getting worse – as is the discontent of the citizens. But while this is growing, the budget available to the municipality is shrinking more and more. The municipal road network in the district capital is 136 kilometers long. All at once, that is not possible.
1.5 to 2 million euros
“The municipality of Braunau invests between 1.5 and two million euros annually in the municipality’s own road network. These significant investments reflect our commitment to improving the infrastructure,” says VP Finance Councillor Josef Knauseder. He understands the discontent about the condition of the roads and the delays in the renovation measures. But: “The wave of inflation has not spared the municipality either. We are facing a tense financial situation. Our primary goal is to prevent Braunau from becoming a community that is losing its ability to make its own decisions,” stresses Knauseder.
The biggest burden on the budget currently includes social spending. The municipality continues to rely on support from the state and federal government to ensure financial stability.
