The man has not yet been found, and a rescue operation had to be called off due to the increasing risk of avalanches, South Tyrolean media reported. The man had apparently climbed the Minnigeroderinne together with another alpinist. When his rope partner reached the summit, the snow slab broke loose and swept the South Tyrolean away.

He was still about 50 meters below the summit. According to reports, the second climber was only grazed by the snow masses. He immediately called the rescue team. Two emergency helicopters then flew to the avalanche cone. The man’s backpack and skis were found, but the operation had to be aborted for the time being.
Rescue possible at the earliest Saturday morning
In the afternoon, a specially equipped helicopter from the financial police was to attempt to locate the mobile phone of the mountaineer who had fallen. However, a rescue could take place on Saturday morning at the earliest, provided that the temperatures are still low enough and the risk of another avalanche is manageable, reported the Internet platform “stol.it” and Rai Südtirol.
According to the Sulden mountain rescue service, the wet snow avalanche is said to have released itself. The missing person is a 44-year-old man from the South Tyrolean lowlands.
