Uruguay continues working to open new markets in the world for its products, while large agreements such as the Mercosur and the European Union (EU) or the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Chinba are delayed due to rather bureaucratic issues and the particular interests of the countries involved.
In this sense, different government delegations held important meetings with representatives from different countries, especially in middle East and Asia, places that are increasingly opening their doors to South American meat.
Talks with Saudi Arabia
One of the meetings was led by the chancellor Omar Paganini, that met in Costa Rica with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy for Climate Change of Saudi Arabia, Adel Aljubeir; within the framework of the “High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change”.

Advances in Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia is the target of Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) in his current diplomatic mission. In that sense, and also thanks to the work of the Foreign Ministry, Uruguay made important progress with both Indonesia as with Malaysia.
In the first case, the country took new steps to achieve Halal certification in some products, an essential requirement to access that market, which has an abundant and mostly Muslim population. Likewise, a Memorandum of Understanding on agricultural mattersto continue strengthening ties of cooperation between both nations, and conversations were held on the potential to increase bilateral trade and exchange.
In the case of Malaysia, the MGAP confirmed a new agreement for the reopening of the export of Halal beef and sheep. It was also announced that very soon they will carry out the necessary technical specifications so that exports comply with the “sanitary and religious requirements necessary for the beginning of the commercial flow.”
New exchanges with Argentina
Besides, Uruguay will start importing Pork Meat from Argentina, as part of an agreement closed based on the consequences in this market caused by the serious floods in Brazil.
The agreement will be in force for 6 months for four establishments and represents a new gesture of rapprochement between both countries, within the framework of an improvement in the bilateral relationship after the assumption of Javier Milei and his good harmony with Luis Lacalle Pou.
