Floods in Germany: Water levels continue to fall

In the three-river city of Passau, 8.29 meters were measured at the Danube measuring point on Saturday – which corresponds to reporting level 3.

However, new rainfall could cause individual water levels to rise again. The water level with the highest warning level 4 has reportedly been exceeded on the Danube in Lower Bavaria in Hofkirchen and Vilshofen. With this warning level, the HND is warning of large-scale flooding in built-up areas. However, it expected the water level to fall below the highest warning level on Saturday.

The water level of the Danube is also falling in Passau, Straubing and Deggendorf, among other places, it said. In the three-river city of Passau, 8.29 meters were measured at the Danube measuring point on Saturday – which corresponds to reporting level 3. After the heavy rain, 9.99 meters were measured last Tuesday; a normal level would be around 5.50 meters.

Thunderstorms with heavy rain and local storms expected

The German Weather Service expected thunderstorms with heavy rain and local storms from the southwest in the afternoon. The HND experts therefore expected the Isar to rise again in Munich, Lenggries and Egling – but only to warning level 1, in which the water can overflow the banks in places. At some measuring points, however, the HND also expected a rise to the second warning level, in which, among other things, agricultural areas could be flooded. For example, in Plattling and at the Inkofen / Amper gauge.

Despite the new rain forecast, the flood situation is expected to continue to ease. “Today’s local heavy rain and thunderstorms will not have a wider impact,” the HND said on Saturday. However, warning levels could be exceeded in many areas during the night into Monday.
