Parliamentary elections in Belgium have begun

Parliamentary elections in Belgium have begun
At the same time as the EU elections, the parliamentary elections also began in Belgium.

Around eight million eligible voters in Germany’s western neighbour are called upon to elect 150 members of the Chamber of Deputies in Brussels.

The regional parliaments in Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels capital region, as well as the parliament of the German-speaking community with around 80,000 inhabitants, will also be re-elected. Voting is compulsory in Belgium. Those who do not vote without a reason accepted by a judge face a fine.

Forming a government in a country that is divided into regions and language groups is likely to be difficult again. According to polls, the radical right-wing party Vlaams Belang from the economically stronger region of Flanders is likely to have the edge. In Wallonia, the southern part of the country, the Liberals and the center-left party were ahead in a recent poll.

After the last parliamentary election in 2019, it took around 16 months for the so-called Vivaldi coalition of seven parties to be formed: the Greens, the Liberals and the Social Democrats from both parts of the country, as well as the Christian Democrats from Flanders. The Flemish Liberal Alexander De Croo has been head of government since then.
