Snails everywhere! What really helps against the voracious slimy creatures in the garden?

Gardening enthusiasts are currently discussing one topic in particular: snails and how best to get rid of them. The rain of the past few days and weeks has led to a veritable invasion of these creatures: they are radically eating away all the young shoots of plants, lettuce and even flowers.

Almost 90 percent of the damage caused by feeding in vegetable and flower beds is caused by the Spanish slug. It was introduced to Austria in the 1960s and has almost no natural enemies here. Toads, hedgehogs and birds, which otherwise like to eat slugs, avoid them. The animals secrete so much mucus that the beneficial insects would suffocate on it.
