However, the numbers for electric cars are declining, according to data published by Statistics Austria on Tuesday. According to the data, the number of newly registered electric cars fell by 6.8 percent, or around 1,300, to 17,482. A good three-quarters of the registrations were for commercial use.

Between January and May of this year, 13,133 (January to May 2023: 14,706) electric cars were registered in the commercial sector – i.e. by companies, local authorities and legal entities – while the number among private users was 4,349. However, there was an increase in new registrations among private individuals, as only 4,045 electric cars were registered in the first five months of 2023. The reported decrease in electric cars is therefore due to the commercial sector.

In addition to electric cars, registrations also declined for cars with diesel hybrid drives (minus 5.5 percent). However, registrations increased for cars with petrol hybrid drives (plus 13.9 percent) and for cars with conventional drives. The increase for diesel cars was 2.9 percent, while an increase of 0.7 percent was recorded for petrol cars.
