Groundbreaking ceremony in Handenberg: From autumn, the district of Braunau will have its artificial green
Last week the groundbreaking ceremony for the artificial turf pitch in Handenberg took place.

Good things come to those who wait. After long and tough discussions about the location of an artificial turf pitch in the Braunau district, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility in Handenberg recently took place. The excavators have already arrived at the pitch of the second-class southwest club, and work is expected to be completed by the end of September. After the two artificial turf pitches in Ried and Hohenzell, the pitch in Handenberg will be the third in the Innviertel.

“Great thing”

As reported in the OÖN, Handenberg was awarded the Upper Austrian Football Association’s contract for the construction in May 2022. The decisive factor was the municipality’s central location in the district, the association said at the time. But Handenberg was not the first choice: Before that, there had been years of discussions about the artificial turf pitch in Pischelsdorf – where the project was originally planned. The facility became a political issue and ultimately failed in April 2022, despite numerous positive reports, not only due to resistance from local residents, but above all due to the increased construction costs. Just a few weeks later, the association announced the construction in Handenberg.

There, there is obviously great joy about the start of work. “For us as a club, it is of course a great thing that we have been awarded the contract for the construction and that we can now finally get started. Even if it is no small sum in financial terms,” says TSU section leader Günter Russinger. The total costs amount to around 1.4 million euros, but this also includes the costs for the extension of the clubhouse. In addition to the subsidies from the state, municipality and football association, the club has to invest almost 400,000 euros of its own funds in the new building and renovation. “The financing plan is in place and is also feasible for us. Otherwise we would not have been able to start the construction work,” Russinger clarifies.

In the long term, the new artificial turf pitch will have a positive financial impact on TSU Handenberg. According to Russinger, the first clubs have already signed up to rent the pitch. The new artificial turf will be particularly busy during the winter preparations. It will consist of quartz sand, cork granulate and a special plastic.
