Austria’s athletics celebrated a great moment in Rome. Javelin thrower Victoria Hudson lived up to her role as co-favourite and crowned herself the third red-white-red European champion in history. The 28-year-old put herself on a par with Liese Prokop (1969 in the pentathlon) and Ilona Gusenbauer (1971 in the high jump).
“It’s unbelievable,” said Hudson, who clapped her hands in front of her face and shed tears of joy in her hour of triumph. At 10:47 p.m., gold was secured, although the athlete from Hainburg an der Donau still had a sixth throw – as a bonus – up her sleeve. None of her competitors could match Hudson’s perfect start.
Her first attempt “sailed” to 64.62 meters. It was clear early on that the HLSZ athlete – the daughter of a Briton and an Austrian – would perform magic. Her rivals failed one after the other to reach this mark. Silver went to Serbian Adriana Vilagos (64.42 m), bronze to Norwegian Marie-Therese Obst (63.50 m).
