G7 summit in Apulia aims to strengthen Ukraine

US President Joe Biden: New sanctions package against Russia

The heads of state and government of the seven democratic industrial nations (G7) want to make another effort to strengthen Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia, militarily and financially.

The war in Ukraine is the central topic of the three-day summit, which begins on Thursday in the Italian luxury hotel “Borgo Egnazia” in Apulia. The Gaza war, the difficult trade relations with China and migration are also on the agenda.

The Group of Seven includes the USA, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy, which is hosting and chairing this year. President Joe Biden is travelling from the USA.

Council President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will be there for the EU. Other guests at the summit include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and, for the first time, the Pope.

Shortly before the start of the summit, the USA also presented a new package of sanctions against Russia. The sanctions were aimed at more than 300 people and institutions that enabled Russia to continue the war, the US government announced on Wednesday. These also included Chinese companies.
