A police spokesman confirmed this when asked. Four children were buried, three were slightly injured, and help came too late for another. The earth was probably loosened by the rain of the past few days when the mother of two of the children was out in the forest with two others.
Hundreds of emergency personnel on site
The accident site is in a forest in Segensdorfberg, southwest of St. Marein near Graz. The earth is said to have fallen off at around 5 p.m. Further details and information on the identity of those affected were not yet available. While three of the children apparently escaped unscathed, one died. According to the police, a crisis intervention team was deployed to look after the relatives. Around a hundred emergency personnel were on site for the rescue and recovery operations, as well as at least one rescue helicopter.
Slopes soaked after rainfall
In Styria, heavy rainfall since last week has soaked slopes and caused slides in dozens of places. So far, no one has been hurt. The rain eased over the course of Wednesday, but by the evening there was still no quick end to the bad weather in sight. In many places, slopes had already started to move on their own. The authorities have been warning for days to exercise extreme caution when spending time outdoors and especially near bodies of water.
