International aviation causes 2.5 percent of global CO2 emissions every year. However, it is not just the thousands of aircraft that take off every day and burn kerosene that make a significant contribution to this, it is also the manufacturing processes that are particularly resource-intensive in aviation. Since 2021, a European research project – with the participation of Johannes Kepler University – has been investigating how the industry can become more sustainable and materials can be used more than once.
The project is called “Sustainair” and its results are intended to bring aviation closer to the goals enshrined in the European Green Deal. The European Union is providing a total of five million euros in funding.
Christoph Kralovec, assistant professor for structural lightweight construction at the JKU and project participant, speaks of an approach towards a circular economy: “The goal is to minimize material waste in the production of components and to make them more durable.” This applies to sheet metal on the hull as well as elements in the interior of the aircraft.
