Protests will take place in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Klagenfurt next Monday and on 21 and 25 June – each evening from 5.30 p.m. to 10 p.m., i.e. during the Austria Games. The union vida announced this on Friday.
It is a scandal that there is enough money for UEFA sponsorship but not for a pay rise for employees, complains Markus Petritsch, vida chairman of the road department, in a press release. The union is demanding a pay rise of 8.7 percent, while the employers’ offer is 5.8 percent. “When we demand cost-of-living compensation for the bicycle messengers, we are not talking about luxury or putting money aside. We are talking about the fact that work should not make people poor and should enable them to live a good life,” said the vida union representative.
Around 4500 messengers in Austria
Negotiations between employers and employee representatives in the industry have been at a standstill for months, and there are repeated strikes. However, many bicycle couriers are not even covered by the collective agreement. There are around 4,500 bicycle couriers in Austria, but only around 2,000 of them are employed under the collective agreement. Lieferando in particular employs its employees under the collective agreement, while at Foodora almost all couriers are freelancers. Wolt, which is only represented in Vienna, also only has self-employed people and freelancers.
