The mayor of Montevideo on leave and presidential pre-candidate for the Broad Front (FA), Carolina Cossereiterated its commitment to allocate 1% of the product to science and innovation if she is elected as president of the Republic in the 2024 elections.

In the framework of a press conference in which she was accompanied by several scientists who support her pre-candidacy, the capital leader reaffirmed her commitment to the development of science in the Uruguay and strengthen scientific research institutes.

“Without raising slogans, working on reality and with the groups,” he pointed out. cosse on the real viability of these proposals and reaching the figure of 1% of the product, which was already a proposal of the FA in previous campaigns, but ultimately did not prosper.

In that sense, the Broad Front policy valued that investing 1% of the product in scientific development “has been the country’s duty” for several years. “What we are proposing is to organize the institutional framework that exists in scientific research, because there is a lot of dispersion, in order to concentrate efforts,” he continued.

The role of the INIA in a potential government

“We are planning to create a new scientific research institute. We are planning to strengthen the INIA (National Agricultural Research Institute) with the participation of other actors, and we are proposing that there is no distinction between pure and applied science, it is science. You cannot put an agenda on science, you can put the country’s priorities on it,” he concluded. cosse.

In March, cosse had declared during an interview that the agroindustrial base of the Uruguay was “undeniable” and that the agricultural sector was “the one that most quickly understood the benefit of associating with science”, so the scientific research carried out at the INIA should be articulated with that of the Faculty of Agronomy of the University of the Republic (UdelaR).
