Matija Sarkic was only 26 years old.

His English club Millwall announced this on Saturday. The second division club did not initially provide any information about the cause of death. Just ten days ago, Sarkic was in goal for Montenegro in a friendly against Belgium.

“Millwall Football Club is deeply saddened to announce the death of Matija Sarkic at the age of 26,” the statement said. Sarkic, who was born in Grimsby, East England, moved to the London club from Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2023 and was the Lions’ first-choice goalkeeper last season.

Short, serious illness

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time,” Millwall’s statement continued. “The club will have no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected.”

The British newspapers “Daily Mirror” and “The Sun” reported, without citing sources, that Sarkic had died after a short, serious illness.
