Another mountain accident in the Salzkammergut on Saturday: After a young climber was hit in the head by a fist-sized stone during a training day at lunchtime and had to be rescued from the Echernwand by helicopter – the OÖNachrichten reported – a 45-year-old from the Czech Republic was injured in the afternoon during a mountain tour in the Totes Gebirge. The man had set off from Grünau im Almtal in the direction of the Welserhütte.
At around 2 p.m. he reached the Fleischbanksattel and began the descent to the hut. It quickly became apparent how treacherous the situation on the mountain can be all year round: the area is almost completely covered in snow. The 45-year-old suddenly fell knee-deep into the snow and injured himself. Although he was able to descend to the Welserhütte on his own, he was unable to go any further. As the bleeding was difficult to stop, the rescue service was called. The man had to be taken to the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Kirchdorf Clinic by emergency helicopter.
