Smoking ban on playgrounds is not coming

Public areas for children and young people – such as playgrounds – should be smoke-free.

Such a demand has been made for a long time, and the ÖVP has submitted a corresponding motion. Raml also supports the demand in principle.

However, a statement by the supervisory authority (Upper Austria) on anchoring the ban in the green space regulations was negative. A nationwide regulation would be needed, but despite repeated announcements, this has failed due to the coalition’s disagreement. Raml is therefore already appealing to a future federal government to implement a ban.

Criticism of the ÖVP

Criticism comes from the Linz ÖVP. The example of Graz shows that a smoking ban on playgrounds is very possible by means of a local police ordinance. This has already been in place there since 2020, says local councilor Theresa Ganhör.
