The incident occurred last Saturday in Courbevoie, a Parisian suburb, according to what the victim reported to the police. They were accused of “aggravated rape, aggravated sexual assault, attempted extortion, invasion of privacy, death threat, violence and insults”these last two crimes being aggravated by their commission due to the religious affiliation of the victim.

The case put the discussion about anti-Semitism and hate speech at the center of the electoral campaign. All political parties and candidates in the June 30 elections expressed their “horror” and repudiation of the crime. For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron called for a debate on the fight against anti-Semitism and racism in all schools.

Macron this Wednesday asked to the Minister of Education, Nicole Belloubet, “to organize a debate in all schools on the fight against anti-Semitism and racism, to prevent hate speech with serious consequences from infiltrating schools,” reported the French president’s office.

In this days several politicians condemned the incident and they asked to eradicate anti-Semitism that, some denounce, has increased since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip unleashed by the Hamas attack on Israeli lands on October 7.
