A Belgian becomes coach at the Swans Gmunden

New coach Thomas Crab

The month-long search for a head coach and successor to Anton Mirolybov has come to an end. 72 candidates were offered to Austria’s basketball super league team OCS Swans Gmunden, three of whom were invited to a hearing, and the last one to audition won the race. Thomas Crab, a 36-year-old Belgian who had most recently been head coach at Okapi Aalst in his home country (February 2022 to May 2024). Before the last year of his contract, they parted ways; Crab was ready for a new challenge, which he found.

“He is young, committed and hungry. He also brings experience in a league that is certainly above ours,” reported Swans CFO Harald Stelzer. He knows full well that Crab, whose contract initially runs until 2025, will have to do hard work. Because the “Swans” are facing a change that could happen faster than expected.

Güttl’s departure hurts

With Benedikt Güttl, the league’s best defensive player is saying goodbye. The 30-year-old, born in Vienna, is returning to his home club, the Traiskirchen Lions. “In five years, there hasn’t been the slightest problem with him. He is a model professional who can only be congratulated on his personal attitude and his intellect. He came to Gmunden to win titles. He did it,” said Stelzer, praising Güttl.

It is currently unclear whether Toni Blazan (32) will continue to play for Gmunden. The “3×3” project is quite an attractive one.
