Dozens of other people were taken to hospitals in the southern state of Tamil Nadu after consuming the alcohol, local media such as the television station NDTV reported on Thursday, citing the authorities. The affected people suffered from symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.

The police have seized many liters of the adulterated drink, which laboratory tests have shown to contain toxic methanol. Several suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime, said the head of government of the affected state, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, on Platform X. Several officials who had not prevented the crime have been suspended or transferred.
In India, hundreds of mostly poor people die every year because they have drunk adulterated liquor. This is cheaper than commercially produced liquor, but, as in the current case, is often laced with methanol or other substances that can lead to serious poisoning.
