The Gmunden mountain rescuers have always taken an exercise on the Traunstein seriously. But probably never as seriously as on Wednesday evening. Because suddenly it wasn’t an exercise any more.
The mountain rescue team had to rescue an injured hiker from impassable, steep terrain. It was a very complicated operation because the rescue was supposed to be carried out using a mountain stretcher. But at 7:15 p.m., all of that was just a side issue. That’s when a real alarm went off.
A 43-year-old man from Passau had managed to climb and descend the Traunstein without any problems, but then collapsed right at the start of the Naturfreundesteig. He had stopped breathing and circulatory activity, and every second counted.
With the help of a defibrillator, the completely dehydrated hiker was brought back to life after several attempts. The Gmunden Red Cross took the man to the “Unterm Stein” landing site, and the emergency helicopter “Martin 3” flew him to the Wels hospital.
On Thursday, the relieving news came from there: the 43-year-old is on the road to recovery and will soon be allowed to leave the hospital.
