The former minister of Work and Social Security (MTSS) It will seek that on July 1, one day after the internal elections, the presidential candidates of the ruling party and the opposition sign an agreement showing their rejection of the initiative carried out by the union center.

In that sense, the PI candidate explained to the press that once the presidential candidates of each party have been defined, he will call them to “propose that they sign a declaration that rejects the plebiscite proposed by the PIT-CNT“.
“This plebiscite would result in an enormous growth of the deficit of the retirements and pensions, which goes against the objectives that all parties agreed on in 2019,” stated Mieres. “In addition, it would frustrate the possibility of allocating resources to other priorities, especially those linked to the most vulnerable,” continued the former MTSS head.
“It would take Uruguay to a critical situation”
In this sense, he stressed the importance of sending a joint message to the citizens: “We want to send a great signal from the entire political system regarding an issue that I consider deeply wrong and that would lead to Uruguay to a critical situation”.
“The idea is to reach October with as many candidates as possible opposing the plebiscite”, said Mieres, who understands that, if the plebiscite of the union center is approved, the payment of retirements and pensions would increase in such a way that “in 25 years the deficit would increase five times more in terms of points of the GDP regarding the law approved last year”.
