He Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) gave financial recognition to the beneficiaries of the program Energy Efficiency Certificates, through which savings of about 318 million pesos were achieved during 2023.

The government stated that this amount, which is equivalent to the consumption of electricity of 41,600 Uruguayan homes. “We all benefit, because we gain in comfort, we gain in competitiveness and we save,” stated the national director of Energy, Christian Nieves.

A total of 190 applications from 186 beneficiaries were approved in 2023, with 208 measures implemented in 11 departments and total investments for more than 1,400 million pesos to coordinate actions in different sectors of activity and households.

He energy saving annually is equivalent to electrical consumtion of 41,600 Uruguayan homes, a figure similar to that existing in the entire department of Leap. Meanwhile, the economic recognition given by the MIEM to the beneficiaries was 61.2 million pesos.

Uruguay stands out worldwide in energy efficiency

Despite a recent ranking that revealed a negative result in energy transition, Nieves highlighted that “Uruguay “It is very good compared to the world in terms of energy efficiency.”

The leader maintained that “today in Latin America many countries are just talking about the first energy transition and that it is something that has cost them a lot” and compared: “We are happily talking about the second transition, because we have already achieved that our electrical production matrix is practically 100% renewable”.

“An important pillar of this second transition is the energy efficiency It is what we can save through measures of technological change and cultural change, which is fundamental,” he argued.

For his part, the manager of the Energy Efficiency Area, Sebastian Lattanzio, assessed that the amount received as part of the certificates leverages measures as important as the replacement of a boiler fossil fuel for another that works biomass.

“There we have a triple impact: an improvement in the production process of that company and a decrease in energy consumption associated with a reduction of emissions”, Lattanzio highlighted.
