Emily Deschanel plays Suzanne Mathis, a psychiatrist who works at a hospital in a Cleveland suburb. One morning, she receives an urgent call to caring for an unidentified patient who does not speakleaving his family at home, although they seem accustomed to his absences.
The patient is a teenager who has been expelled from her home. He does not speak and has large scars on his back, coming from an isolated community similar to the Amish in Amon County. Upon examination, Suzanne discovers that The young woman has suffered continuous abuse. After a conversation with her, Suzanne learns that her name is Mae. When the hospital decides to discharge Mae, Suzanne chooses to take her home temporarily.until a place is found in a foster home.
