According to the forecasts from Geosphere Austria, there will be stormy winds and thunderstorms today from 3 p.m. “Most of Upper Austria will be affected. Locally we expect wind gusts of up to 100 km/h,” says meteorologist Josef Haslhofer from Geosphere Austria. The expert does not rule out hail either.
The weather would therefore also have an impact on the many public viewings in Upper Austria. The good news: the meteorologist is predicting calmer weather for the kick-off of the European Championship match between Austria and Poland at 6 p.m. “The storm should have left Upper Austria by 6 p.m.” However, a second storm cell is heading towards the country. This is expected to bring more thunderstorms and rain showers during the night. “This storm will not be as severe as it was in the afternoon, however,” says Haslhofer.
Thunderstorms on Thursday
On Thursday evening, a storm front moved through the Salzkammergut from the west and required the fire brigades. By 8 p.m., many fire brigades were busy dealing with the damage caused by the storm front. The districts affected were Gmunden, Kirchdorf, Steyr-Land and Steyr-Stadt. The central area, the Mühlviertel and large parts of the Innviertel were largely spared from damage.
