It was a very tricky operation that involved a total of 6 fire departments, police and water rescue teams on Friday afternoon in Gmunden: liquid gas had leaked from an underground tank at the foot of the Traunstein. There was a high risk of explosion.

Apparently there had been a communication error. Technicians who were supposed to work on the underground tank were informed that the tank was empty – whereupon they unscrewed the lid, according to initial information.
“That’s when the leak occurred,” says the commander of the Gmunden fire department, Gerald Kahrer. A 300-meter exclusion zone was set up, the road was cordoned off – but also part of the lake, according to the commander. Around 20 residents had to temporarily leave their homes. And hikers who came from Traunstein also had to wait. “There was a massive risk of explosion at the beginning,” says Gerald Kahrer. That’s why special tools that don’t produce sparks had to be used.
The fire chief says that people in the area did not become nervous. However, some wanted to ignore the roadblocks. “But we let the police sort that out.”
