The second largest city in Upper Austria is Vienna. 75,000 compatriots live in the federal capital, and the number is rising. This is also noticeable at the Upper Austrian Ball in Vienna, the 121st edition of which began promptly at 9 p.m. in Vienna City Hall.
To mark the inauguration, the actual “master of the house”, Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig of the SPÖ, symbolically handed over the sceptre to Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) – albeit with reservations: “My personal goal is that Vienna will one day be the capital of Upper Austria,” joked Ludwig.
Stelzer replied that, given the large number of Upper Austrians, Vienna could join the 438 municipalities “at any time”.
Waltz, Bruckner and Falco
The Bruckner Year and Capital of Culture also left their mark at the opening. The St. Florian Boys’ Choir, for example, had rewritten the legendary “Rock Me Amadeus” by Viennese pop legend Falco as “Rock Me Anton Bruckner”.
The ball is organized by the Association of Upper Austrians in Vienna. Its chairman, Günther Mayrleitner, raved about the atmosphere and audience in his opening speech: “You are what makes this ball special.”
After the opening, the visitors streamed onto the dance floor, three-quarter time was the order of the day. The waltz sounds of the Big Band Project set the tone, and the program also included performances by the Linz musical ensemble, the show eight “Zamquetscht” by the Woodstock brass band and the midnight performance “The Rats Are Back” with Eric Papilaya, Norbert Oberhauser and Volker Piesczek.
