This was reported to the Reuters news agency on Sunday by two people familiar with the matter. The Justice Department found in May that Boeing had violated a 2021 agreement in connection with two crashes of 737 MAX jets that killed a total of 346 people. The Justice Department must decide on criminal prosecution by July 7. A Justice Department spokesman initially declined to comment when asked by Reuters.

As part of the 2021 agreement, the Airbus rival paid $2.5 billion to avoid prosecution for fraud at the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In return, the company had to revise its compliance procedures and submit regular reports. According to insiders, prosecutors see these requirements as violated. Boeing denied the allegations.
Last week, relatives of the victims of the two crashes called on prosecutors to impose a fine of almost $25 billion on Boeing and to take criminal action against the aircraft manufacturer.
