For years, residents of Weißkirchen (Wels-Land district) have suffered from truck traffic through their town. Their anger about this even culminated in road blockades a few years ago. Now local politicians are trying a new approach to curb traffic and are calling for a general driving ban for trucks over 3.5 tonnes (with the exception of destination and source traffic).
The motion was submitted by Manfred Gierlinger (FP), chairman of the building and road committee, at the most recent municipal council meeting on June 20. The resolution to the state of Upper Austria for a driving ban was passed unanimously. The driving ban is to apply from the roundabout at Spar to the town exit (turnoff towards Eggendorf).
“The postal distribution center in Allhaming is not part of the regional target traffic and must be affected by the ban,” says Gierlinger. The introduction of the night-time driving ban for trucks in 2018 did not improve the situation in the long term, which is why more drastic measures are needed.
Mayor Norbert Höpoltseder (SP) is now increasingly confronted with complaints from residents in the warm summer months. “When the windows are opened, instead of a cool breeze at night, there is a ruckus from the trucks. I understand the displeasure,” says Höpoltseder. Traffic counts show around 700 trucks a day in the section. And many drivers do not comply with the current night driving ban from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. “The trucks that come from Amazon in Germany are causing problems, but also despite assurances to the contrary from the post office. I photographed the trucks myself at 5 a.m.,” says Höpoltseder. The police are doing everything they can to enforce the night driving ban. “But the police cannot just stand by us.”
It all starts at four in the morning when the first heavy vehicles head for the postal distribution center and take the shortcut through Weißkirchen instead of the somewhat longer loop via Haid to Allhaming. They save themselves motorway tolls at the expense of Weißkirchen residents.
The resolution for a truck driving ban was submitted to the state’s petitions committee.
