Migraine sufferers often suffer from sleep disorders

New study: Insomnia and migraines may be related.

People who suffer from migraines are often also plagued by depression, anxiety disorders and sleep disorders. This is shown by a new Greek study.

Austrian researchers also confirm this: almost 65 percent of patients suffer from anxiety disorders and depression in addition to this type of headache. As the frequency of migraine attacks increases, the psychiatric symptoms also become more severe.

“In order to reduce the risk of chronicity and thus lower the likelihood of comorbid psychiatric illnesses occurring, it is extremely important to treat migraine patients as early and as adequately as possible,” says Sonja-Maria Tesar, President of the Austrian Headache Society. In addition to the drug treatment of acute attacks, according to the neurologist, prophylaxis is a central component of effective migraine therapy.
