A week ago, the OÖN newspaper ran the headline “From SV Ried to the Champions League?”. This exclusive report was about the specific interest of the reigning champions and cup winners Sturm Graz in the 18-year-old Slovenian Arjan Malic, who made it onto the notes of Austrian and foreign clubs with his exceptionally strong performances last season. Malic was no longer in the squad for SV Ried’s friendly match against Burghausen last Friday. It is expected that the transfer will be made official by the two clubs this Wednesday.

According to OÖN information, Malic, who played 29 of 30 possible games for Ried in the last second division season, completed a fitness test at Sturm Graz on Tuesday. The transfer fee is set at around half a million euros. Ried would continue to earn money from future transfer proceeds in the form of training compensation. Malic moved from SV Ried’s youth team to the junior academy five years ago. A year ago, the 1.86 meter tall central defender was promoted from the U18 academy to the pros.

Of course, it will not be possible to compensate for Malic’s departure one-to-one. With Benjamin Sammer (19) and Matthias Gragger (22), there are other young defenders from the club’s youth team in the squad who can hope to play in the second division.

Sollbauer before commitment

With Michael Sollbauer, a veteran could be presented as the new central defender on Wednesday. The 34-year-old central defender’s contract with Rapid Vienna was not renewed, so he could move to the Innviertel on a free transfer.

Ried coach Maximilian Senft knows the experienced player from his time as assistant coach at Wolfsberg and FC Barnsley (England). Sollbauer has already played 547 competitive matches in his career – by far the most (310) for Bundesliga club Wolfsberger AC. Ried will play the second test match of the summer preparations next Friday in Sankt Roman. Their opponents are Romanian first division team Universitatea Cluj, who finished last season in seventh place. The match starts at 6 p.m.
