Electricity for the train, shade for the animals: The ÖBB is building an agri-photovoltaic system for railway power in Taiskirchen in the Innviertel, which, according to the company, enables environmentally friendly multiple use.
Construction will soon begin with the ramming of the substructure for the PV system, and the system is scheduled to be completed in spring 2025. The meadow beneath the PV modules will serve as pasture for 9,600 chickens and around 100 sheep. Trees, shrubs and flower strips will contribute to more biodiversity, it is said.
The pilot project is intended to help ÖBB increase its self-sufficiency in green traction current to 80 percent. It is currently 60 percent. On a project area of around 18 hectares, the photovoltaic system achieves an annual energy yield of around 20 GWh (gigawatt hours) – this corresponds to around 6,700 Railjet trips from Linz to Vienna. Due to its proximity to the ÖBB substation in Riedau, the 16.7 Hz traction current produced is fed into the ÖBB traction current network via a cable route of around 2.5 km.
Existing construction sites will be taken into account, for example the cable route and the cycle path will be built between Taiskirchen and Riedau.
Independent of suppliers
“We have been using 100 percent green traction power since 2018 and have also been supplying all buildings, facilities and container terminals with 100 percent electricity from renewable energies since 2019. We are happy to be pioneers in green power and mobility,” says Johann Pluy, CEO of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. The plant in Taiskirchen creates a dual use for the environment and agriculture.
In order to become more independent from external energy suppliers, the ÖBB is investing a total of 1.6 billion euros by 2030. The railway wants to increase the level of self-supply with renewables in its operating facilities from eleven to 67 percent. In addition, energy efficiency is to be increased by 25 percent, for example through the modernization of the railway power network or the optimization of buildings.
