Numerous robes of Princess Diana (1961-1997) and other memorabilia were auctioned in Los Angeles for 5.5 million dollars (5.14 million euros). According to the auction house Julien’s, bids from thousands of bidders worldwide were received on Thursday (local time). It is the largest collection of memorabilia from Diana since a historic charity auction in 1997 featuring dozens of the princess’s dresses shortly before her death.
The mother of the British princes William and Harry died in a car accident in Paris on the night of August 31, 1997 at the age of 36. The auction in California included dresses, shoes, handbags, hats, gloves, photos and letters from her possession. The most expensive piece was a floor-length evening dress made of silk and lace, which Diana Julien’s said that the dress was worn at events in London and Hamburg in 1987. The creation by fashion designer Victor Edelstein brought in more than $900,000. It had previously been valued at $200,000.
A strapless, dark blue dress embellished with stars by designer Murray Arbeid fetched $780,000, almost four times its high estimate. A black velvet dress designed by Catherine Walker sold for over $570,000.
Jeweled green pumps that Diana The shoes she wore at a reception in London in 1993 went under the hammer for a sensational $390,000. The elegant shoes had previously been valued at $2,000.
According to Julien’s, 15 items were purchased from Renae Plant, who owns the Princess Diana Museum and is one of the largest collectors of Diana-Memorial counts. A portion of the auction proceeds will go to charity.
