International reactions to the French election

Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is pinning his hopes on a “mobilization of the French left” following the Rassemblement National (RN)’s victory in the first round of elections.

Germany’s Despite the strong performance of the RN, the government wants to continue to believe in close cooperation with Paris: “We are working closely and trustingly with France, our most important partner in Europe,” said German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit on Monday in Berlin. “And that is how we want it to stay.” The German government is now waiting to see what the second round of voting will bring.

Italy’s Right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated Le Pen and the RN “on their clear victory in the first round”. Austria FP leader Herbert Kickl came forward with congratulations. “The French voters have made patriotic politics the clear number one,” he said.

Russia interpreted the RN victory as a “clear sign” of the will of the French voters. “The tendencies already evident in a number of European countries are confirmed,” said the spokesman for the Russian presidential office, Dmitry Peskov, on Monday. “But we are waiting for the second round of voting.”
