“They beat me. For 2 hours”: Boys humiliated robbery victim in Linz

The boys attacked their victims at Linz Central Station.

On April 12, 2024, two boys aged 14 and 15 lured three physically inferior boys into a trap at Linz Central Station, robbed them and then forced them to come with them. In a park, one of the victims had to kneel in the middle. The 14-year-old was then beaten and kicked before being humiliated.

“I have never negotiated anything like this before”

The defendants undressed the completely intimidated student after he had handed them his iPhone, headphones and shoes as well as his jacket. They then humiliated him to an extent that was new territory even for the experienced judge. “I have never tried anything like this before. Not in 30 years as a youth judge,” said Judge Daniela Zwangsleitner. The prosecutor spoke of an “excess of violence” and a “display of joy in violence”.

The 15-year-old was sentenced to 15 months in prison, three months of which were mandatory, for robbery, serious bodily harm and serious coercion. The 14-year-old received an additional sentence of ten months, three months of which were mandatory, in consideration of a verdict from April 23 – eleven days after the incident in Linz, he was sentenced to twelve months’ probation in Vienna for another serious robbery. Both boys were ordered to be placed on probation and must also complete anti-violence training.

“They beat me. For two hours,” said the victim of the teenage criminals in the witness stand. The younger of the two defendants already has a previous conviction. The 14-year-old was sentenced to ten months’ probation in Vienna on April 23rd – eleven days after the incident in Linz – for aggravated robbery.

“Everything hurt”

The abused 14-year-old reported in detail to the court what had happened to him. In the end, he finally managed to run away: “I was swollen all over. Everything hurt. For days.” He was unable to go to school for a week because of the pain.

The perpetrators were tracked down using images from a surveillance camera. They made confessions before a jury. “We wanted to rob them,” admitted the 15-year-old. He and his younger friend therefore offered the three boys a joint. This was how they got them to leave the station premises: “We beat them outside.” The three young Upper Austrians were then forced to board a bus with their tormentors, who had travelled from Vienna, which took them to a remote park.

“Thought it was cool”

“Why do people do something like that?” the judge wanted to know from the accused 14-year-old. “Because I thought it was cool. Because I was stupid. I can’t tell you what was going through my head two months ago.”

The 15-year-old also had to answer for a second fact that should not happen every day. On May 8, 2024, the man who was housed in a crisis center went to the Prater with a younger roommate on his eleventh birthday. After a while, he tried to get the boy to sell drugs in the Venediger Au by telling him that he would kill him otherwise. Because the eleven-year-old refused, he was punched in the face by the 15-year-old and another 14-year-old, who was now held responsible as the third defendant.

“I didn’t know where I was anymore”

“I fell down and didn’t know where I was or what had happened,” the eleven-year-old told the Senate. He briefly lost consciousness. When asked if he had been injured, the child said: “My rib hurt. I had to go to the hospital. I was there for two days.”

The 14-year-old involved, who despite his almost childish age already has a previous conviction for robbery and against whom the public prosecutor’s office is investigating a robbery on a subway, was sentenced to twelve months in prison. Four months of this was imposed unconditionally, and the rest was suspended for a probationary period. His first suspended sentence – six months – was not revoked. This probationary period was extended to five years.

All the verdicts are not final. While the boys accepted the sentences imposed on them, the prosecutor has not yet made any statement.
