The social security referendum once again dominates the political agenda

With the heat of the internal still close and during the first days of outlining strategies for October with most of the formulas already confirmed, the plebiscite against social security reform driven by the PIT-CNT is put back on the table political agenda and, eventually, of the Campaign. In this sense, it is one of the points that unifies the programmatic proposals of the different candidates, but which also raises doubts—still—even within the parties.

The one who did not waste time in bringing the plebiscite back into the spotlight was Pablo Mieres that, as a former minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS)sees the anti-constitutional reform crusade as an almost personal duty. In this regard, as he had announced before the election day on Sunday, he called for Yamandú Orsi, Alvaro Delgado, Andres Ojeda and Guido Manini Rios to issue a joint statement against the proposal of the PIT-CNT.

“What we did today was to speak by phone with the four candidates and explain this idea to them,” Mieres said at a press conference on Tuesday night. “I sent the four of them a draft that is intended to be just that, a draft, so that they can all agree and sign it. I think it is a strong signal to the citizens to indicate that there is agreement that this is very negative,” he added.

Discomfort in the Broad Front

The unity of the Broad Front represented in the Yamandú Orsi formula – Carolina Cosse The party will face some difficulties in terms of reconciling the programmatic proposals, despite having the left-wing coalition program as a common basic structure. The position regarding the plebiscite could be one of the most uncomfortable points, especially since it has already generated tensions and insecurities within the party.

In this regard, Orsi spoke at the end of the meeting with Cosse – in which the strategy for October began to be defined and where, surely, the plebiscite was one of the points discussed—and reiterated that the Broad Front gave leeway regarding the proposal of the trade union center. It should be remembered that the mayor of Montevideo on leave had signed the ballot, arguing the need to give citizens the opportunity to decide; while the former mayor of cannelloni had shown his disagreement from the very beginning.

Once the signatures were obtained, both preferred not to continue giving their opinion, although the mystery remained more about Cosse – due to the position of the political support of his pre-candidacy—, so one question is what they will decide on the matter now that they are the presidential duo of the left-wing coalition.

Anyway, Orsi confirmed that the Broad Front “The issue is being analyzed” and they will adhere to the decision taken by the political force, still in line with freedom of action. “These are issues that are still being analyzed,” he insisted, without ruling out the possibility of new pronouncements.

“A crucial issue” for the campaign

Another leader who referred to the plebiscite against the social security reform was the former president Julio Maria Sanguinettiand considered that the issue —is the case of the Electoral Court ratify the signatures presented and, with it, the possibility of holding the popular consultation together with the October elections— will be “crucial” in the campaign “because the consequences could be tremendously negative.”

“If a ratification of the plebiscite were to occur, which apart from bringing down a social security system that has been reformed to balance itself again, to balance the State’s finances… if that were to occur, it would naturally be tremendous in the medium term, and in the very short term it would be the bankruptcy of the Uruguay predictable, of Uruguay “which seeks investments based on clear rules of the game,” said the historic leader of the Colorado Party, who on Sunday witnessed how his political space decided the new leaderships in the primaries in favor of Andrés Ojeda.

Asked about the freedom of action defined by the Broad Front, Sanguinetti considered that “it is a good question for them.” “I think that the PIT-CNT has a very strong specific weight in the Broad Front, very triggering, which although it is not expressed in electoral terms, it is expressed in terms of power. That is why the two members of the formula have not spoken out. I think that the Political weight of the PIT-CNT It inhibits them from defining themselves,” he said.
