The verdict is not final. The proceedings against three co-accused friends, who were on trial for failing to prevent a crime, were settled by way of a diversionary fine, a court spokesman said. The friends had met at a house on the evening of January 30th, where the youngest of them is said to have suddenly beaten the host’s family cat to death. The three co-accused claim not to have seen anything of this, and the main accused pleaded guilty.
“I don’t know why I did it”
On the first day of the trial, the public prosecutor had expanded the charge to include defamation, since the 17-year-old at the time of the crime had told the cat’s owner, the host’s stepmother, the next day that he had only put the animal down. Two of his friends had allegedly tortured the cat beforehand. The now adult could not give an explanation for his actions: “I don’t know why I did it,” he repeated in court.
800 Euro fine
The teenager was sentenced to 200 daily rates of four euros each for animal cruelty and defamation, and his suspended prison sentence was suspended for a three-year probationary period. In addition to probation, the boy must also attend psychotherapy counseling. The verdict is not final; the public prosecutor and the defendant took time to consider it.
The co-defendants, two 18-year-old twin brothers and the 19-year-old friend, had pleaded not guilty, so their defense attorneys requested acquittals on the first day of the trial. The twins were each forced to pay 400 euros, which would mean the proceedings against them would be dropped, while the 19-year-old had to pay 500 euros. All of them accepted the judge’s verdict.
